LABUAN: Improving the island’s essential services such as water, electricity and internet is one of the priorities of Pakatan Harapan candidate here Dr Ramli Tahir.
Ramli said it is shameful that Labuan being an oil and gas hub as well as an International Business and Financial Centre (IBFC) continued to be plagued with dry taps.
He said the regular water supply disruptions not only affected 20, 000 consumers but also institutions of higher learning such as the Matriculation College and the UMS Labuan International Campus.
“It is a serious matter,” he said.
He note that since January, the Water Department had issued more than 35 notices of water disruptions due to various problems such as leakages from 50-year-old pipes, problems at the pump stations and these incidents not only affected households but also industries and business premises.
On electricity, Ramli said though the island had ample supply, there were constant shut downs due to upgrading works.
“A reason not acceptable by many. Similarly, internet connections are also not available in certain areas or slow.
On the economy, Ramli said he would address issues related to trade and remove stumbling blocks so that the trade could be revived to a scale similar to before.
Regarding the Labuan-Menumbok bridge, Ramli said it would depend on the economic viability of the project. “It is my hope that it will become a reality in future.”
He also said he would help restore Labuan’s duty free status.
