Kota Kinabalu: Hap Seng Consolidated Berhad (Hap Seng) celebrated the grand opening of Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Monday.

The event was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, represented by Deputy Chief Minister cum Industrial Development Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam.

He was joined by Hap Seng Chairman Thomas Karl Rapp, Hap Seng Managing Director Datuk Edward Lee Ming Foo and Stephen Ho, Hyatt President of Growth and Operations (Asia Pacific).

Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu marks the debut of Hyatt’s rapidly growing lifestyle brand in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, joining five other Hyatt-branded hotels in Malaysia.

Set against the lush backdrop of Signal Hill, the hotel’s contemporary, inviting architecture and interiors by globally renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma reflects the natural heritage of Sabah.

Construction started in May 2019 with the hotel opening its doors on Oct 20, 2022.

The debut of Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu marks the milestone of Hap Seng’s inaugural hotel, with three more Hyatt properties slated to open in the next few years in Malaysia.

The hotel is located in the heart of the city’s lively dining and entertainment district, providing convenience for adventurous explorers and local residents to discover authentic experiences and hidden gems in the coastal capital of Malaysia’s Sabah State on the island of Borneo.

The 23-story hotel features 222 modern guestrooms with balconies and is crowned with an infinity pool, duplex restaurant and bar on the rooftop, offering sweeping views overlooking Signal Hill, the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and South China Sea. It also offers seven versatile meeting spaces catering to all occasions.

“We are excited to introduce Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu as Hyatt’s first Hyatt Centric hotel in Southeast Asia as we continue to grow this vibrant lifestyle brand in Asia Pacific,” said Ho.

Meanwhile, Thomas expressed his gratitude for the steadfast trust and collaboration from the Hap Seng team with the support of the Chief Minister, the local community and the dedication of the entire hotel team, which enabled its successful completion.

“This hotel realises our long-held aspiration to add a world-class hotel to the city of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, the very State which witnessed the humble beginning of the group more than 60 years ago.

“We have no doubt whatsoever that Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu will be able to attract travellers from every corner around the world,” he said.

“At Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu, we aim to inspire the curious minded and the young at heart by offering a modern launch pad for our savvy travellers to discover the rich natural heritage and immersive experiences in the Land Below the Wind, guided by our caring team of local Sabahans,” said its General Manager Ruben Schrijver.
