Self-employed charged with hurting wife
The court set January 6 for pre-trial case management and released Adrah on a bail of RM2,500 in two sureties.
Kota Kinabalu: A self-employed man was charged at the Magistrate’s Court Friday with assaulting his wife, which was the fifth wife-beating case within the last three months.

Adrah Alias, 41, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to causing hurt on his 33-year-old wife’s neck and wrist at a premises at Kingfisher Plaza, Inanam at 10.30pm on Nov 16, this year.

Adrah allegedly committed an offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code.

Section 323 carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both on conviction while Section 326A states that whoever causes hurt to his spouse or former spouse, a child, a disabled adult, or other family members and commits an offence under Section 323, 324, 325, 326, 334 or 335 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of twice as long as the maximum term for which he would be liable to  conviction for that offence.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man was fined RM1,000 or one month in jail for engaging in a gambling session.

Goh Ming Chong admitted to having three pieces of Wahui riddles without a licence at 1.25pm on Sept 28, in Putatan town.

The court was informed by the prosecution that Goh was arrested by police for engaging in a gambling activity at the said area and that RM20 cash was seized from him.

Goh was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

The court ordered the seized money to be forfeited.
