THE Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Barisan Nasional (GRS-BN) and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) State Governments have formed a consensus, through the Borneo Bloc concept, to support a government to be formed at the Federal level that can deliver political stability and benefits to both states. This is possible after both GRS-BN and GPS emerged victorious in the 15th General Elections in their respective states.  Together, they would deliver 36 seats to the eventual overall winner at the federal level. GRS-BN won 13 of the 25 parliamentary seats in Sabah, while GPS won 23 out of the 38 parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said he and his counterpart, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, reached a consensus on the matter after the results were known. “Abang Johari called me just now and we discussed and made a consensus that we want to work together as a Borneo Bloc to support the government to be formed at the Federal level that can deliver political stability and benefits not only to the country but also to Sabah and Sarawak. “We want a stable Federal Government and of course for the State Governments,” he told a press conference held at Sri Gaya, Kota Kinabalu, in early Nov 20. Asked which coalition the Borneo Bloc would work with, Hajiji said that Sabah and Sarawak would discuss it but it would be more towards a federal government that can provide political stability.

“We cannot say it now because we have yet to know the official result,” he said.

“Of course, what I meant by stability is what that government to be formed at the Federal level can give that Sabah and Sarawak can benefit. “What we meant by stability is what is good for Sabah and Sarawak...eventually we have to accept the fact that for us in Sabah, it is always Sabah first.

“The overriding consideration is always to ensure what is best for Sabah, and any party at the federal level that can offer us this we will have to seriously consider,” he said.
