PETALING JAYA: The Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM) has welcomed the call by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, for politicians to stop using racial or religious issues to incite the people.

CCM general secretary Jonathan Jesudas also said Tuanku Muhriz’s call for Putrajaya to instil a spirit of togetherness and adherence to the principles of Rukun Negara among Malaysians was timely.

“In the past few years, we have seen how the leadership and counsel of Their Majesties, the Malay rulers, individually and jointly as the Conference of Rulers, have ameliorated and moderated the excesses of acrimonious party politics in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

“The role and wise leadership, especially of our King, in promoting a politics of reconciliation and unity in place of toxic politics has borne much fruit in preparing Malaysia for a new phase of coalition politics.

“The prayers of the churches in CCM are with the nation, Their Majesties and the various branches of government. God bless our rulers and our government.”

Yesterday, Tuanku Muhriz urged politicians to stop using racial or religious issues to incite Malaysians against one another.

Chairing the 260th meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara, he called on the new government to foster a spirit of togetherness among Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or culture.

“I hope that leaders would no longer raise racial or religious issues for the purpose of inciting the community,” he said.
