E-hailing driver jailed two weeks for theft at shop
Lim said Joshua stole the items as he wanted to resell them for money to purchase diapers and formula milk for his child as his income was not enough plus the prices of items nowadays were expensive and that his wife is not working.
Kota Kinabalu: An e-hailing car driver, who stole a dashcam and a power bank from a shop to purchase diapers and formula milk for his toddler, was jailed two weeks.

Josua Jervy, 31, pleaded guilty before High Court Senior Assistant Registrar Don Stiwin Malanjum to committing the offence at a shop in Sinsuran, here, at 7.26pm on Nov 9.

The prosecution informed the court that Josua’s act was captured on CCTV where he was seen entering the shop and talking to the shop assistant before stealing the items.

The shop suffered loss of RM700, the court heard. Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Josua, requested a bond of good behaviour or minimum fine on the grounds that Josua has no fixed income and works as an e-hailing car driver and is married with a one-year-old child.

The court ordered Josua, who was on police bail from Nov 17, to serve the sentence from Thursday.

Joshua was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine or whipping, on conviction.

Meanwhile, four people were penalised for drink-driving.

Cham Hock Yee, Wong Mee Yong and San Mung Hong who appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie while and Marivic Lego appeared before Don, pleaded guilty to committing the offence in May this year in Penampang and the city.

They were all jailed a day.

Cham was also fined RM10,500, while Wong, San and Marivic were each fined RM10,000 in default three months jail, respectively.

They were charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport (Amended) Act 2020, which provides for a jail term of up to two years and fined between RM10,000 and RM30,000 and lost qualification from holding or getting a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction.

The court ordered their licence to be suspended for two years.

In another case, an unemployed woman claimed trial to cheating an individual over land lot rental.

Priscila Laurence Pion, 54, was accused of deceiving Chee Soo Kee by deliberately hiding the fact that the lease of the CL lot between Renung Permai Sdn Bhd and the Federal Land Commissioner of Malaysia was terminated on Jan 5, 2017 which Chee would not rent the land from her if he knew about the truth.

The offence was allegedly committed at 10am on May 20 this year at Matambai, Jalan Lido-Kapayan and framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution offered bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.

Counsel Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi Md Zain, who stood in for counsel Mohd Al-Hafidz Mohd Lokman, applied for a lower bail amount, on the grounds that the accused is a housewife.

The court set Jan 5 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
