BELURAN: A driver and a passenger died in an accident involving three vehicles at Jalan Telupid-Beluran, at 4.20pm,  Monday.

Beluran District Police Chief Supt Kasim Muda said the victims – Jamil Matesair, 38, and Jumiani Tumanan, 31 – were travelling in a van.

He said investigations showed a Perodua Myvi from Telupid was headed for Sandakan while the van from Sandakan was headed for Telupid.

“The accident was believed to have occurred when the Myvi, which was trying to overtake a trailer in front of it, entered the opposite lane and collided with the van.

“The van then lost control and entered the opposite lane and hit the trailer’s right side. The impact caused the driver and passenger of the van to die several hours later while receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
