Labuan hails scrapping FT Ministry
Wong (left) said by going back to the original system, more importance may be shown to the Island. Dahlif (right) cited the RM86 million halal hub complex which was completed in 2012 but remained idle and was criticised in the Auditor-General’s 2021 report as having an incompetent management team.
LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce sees better days ahead for the island with the Pakatan Harapan-led government’s scrapping of the “ineffective” Federal Territories Ministry and placing administration of the federal territories under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Its Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said this would mean that Labuan would get direct attention of the Prime Minister without having to go through another Minister. The new approach holds out better promises and may lead to faster results on Labuan-related issues.

Wong also noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had served as Finance Minister before and was familar with the island’s financial centre status as well as the historic colonial-era duty free privilege that was unjustly taken away by the previous government.
