Labuan Umno, MCA bosses lose GLC posts

LABUAN: Two leaders of political parties here among the hundreds of political appointees as directors or board members of government-linked entities that had their contract terminated under the new Pakatan Harapan-led unity government.

The duo are a former two-term Senator and Umno Chairman Datuk Bashir Alias and long serving MCA Chairman here, Datuk Chin Hon Vui.

Their names were sighted in the “termination list” that went viral on social media.

Bashir was appointed chairman of the Labuan Corporation in July when the Federal Territories Minister was Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

Bashir contested in GE15 under the Umno banner and lost narrowly by 708 votes to Bersatu’s Dato Suhaili Abdul Rahman who managed 8,124 votes.

While Chin was appointed by then Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Kah Siong as deputy chairman of Labuan Ports Authority before GE15 and his term was due to expire in July 2023.

It was his third term in LPA. The chairman of LPA is MIC’s Datuk P Kamalanathan and it has three other political appointees serving as directors.

The LPA was tasked by the Transport Ministry to undertake one-year study on the viability of the proposed Labuan Integrated Port.
