Kuala Lumpur: Four more deaths were recorded as a result of floods in Kelantan and Terengganu, as the number of evacuees soared to over 45,000 tonight.
Three sisters died of electrocution while wading through floodwaters in Tumpat, Terengganu, while a 15-month-old boy was found drowned in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, at about 1pm.
The death toll now stands at five. A two-year-old girl was the first casualty yesterday. She was believed to have been swept away by floodwaters. Her body was found floating in a ditch about 20m from her home.
The number of flood victims reached more than 45,000 in five states, with Kelantan and Terengganu the hardest hit.
A sharp rise of 10,000 flood victims was recorded in Terengganu at 10pm this evening, as the number rose to 29,717 people from 8,214 families compared to 19,601 from 5,699 families earlier in the evening.
There are currently 273 relief centres operating in all eight districts in the state.
Kemaman was the worst affected district with 8,375 victims, followed by Hulu Terengganu (5,996); Besut (5,492); Setiu (3,172); Dungun (1,963); Kuala Nerus (575); Kuala Terengganu (542); and Marang (379).
Malaysian fire and rescue official Ahmad Izram Osman said aerial monitoring was being conducted to get an accurate account of the situation in Terengganu, and in Kelantan tomorrow.
In Kelantan, the number of flood victims increased to 14,359 people tonight, from 12,104 earlier in the evening.
A total of 104 relief centres were opened in Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Jeli.
Nine rivers exceeded the danger level including Sungai Lebir in Kampung Tualang, Kuala Krai (40.71m); Sungai Golok in Kampung Jenob, Tanah Merah (24.84m) and Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas (10.78m).
In Pahang, the number of flood victims rose slightly to 865. Eight relief centres were opened in Kuantan and three in Raub.
The water level of Sungai Keratong in Rompin has been receding but was still recorded above the danger level tonight.
In Johor, the number of flood victims in Segamat went down, while in Perak, 54 people remain in two relief centres.
