More women lost jobs during lockdowns

Kota Kinabalu: More women than men lost jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns which caused unprecedented job losses, hitting women the hardest.

There are two key reasons women bore the brunt of the pandemic to a greater degree than men. Some of the hardest-hit sectors due to Covid-19 were those where the share of female employment relative to their total employment is higher than that for men.

In most economies, women are more likely to dominate sectors such as tourism, hospitality, food services, and personal care.
