Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has quit his post as Sabah Football Association (Safa) President with immediate effect after almost two years at the helm.
He made the shock announcement in a statement released on Sunday and said an official resignation letter will be submitted to the State body very soon.
Bung, who is also a Member of Parliament for Kinabatangan, said that the resignation was of his own free will and that he wants to focus fully on his political career.
He said he was extremely proud of the progress under his leadership despite the State team failing to win any trophies in the 2022 season.
“Although I am a bit disappointed with the overall achievement of the team last season, I am also very satisfied to some extent that I have succeeded in bringing changes to the administration and the noticeable progress made by the Sabah FC team under my care,” he said.
Sabah finished third in the Super League last season and made it to the semi-final of the Malaysia Cup and quarterfinal of the League Cup competitions.
He also called on all parties, especially the fans to continue their support to his successor.
“Managing the governing body of football is not an easy task, I had to face various challenges in terms of time constraints and getting financial resources to improve the quality of the team and the development of the sport in the State.
“The association will need the support from all parties, especially from the leaders in the State government to help them move forward,” he added.
For the record, Bung was unanimously elected by all Safa affiliated bodies in the extraordinary general meeting held in June 2021 after being appointed as acting President in December 2020 following the resignation of Datuk Peter Anthony.
