Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress award at Golden Globes

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy at this year's Golden Globes Awards.

She picked up the award for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Yeoh becomes the first Malaysian and second Asian to win the award.

In her acceptance speech, Yeoh spoke about arriving in Hollywood as being a dream come true for her until she got there.

“And then someone said to me, ‘You speak English.’ I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India... And then I said, ‘Yeah, the flight here was about 13 hours long, so, I learned.'“

She also spoke about turning 60 last year, saying that as the years and the numbers get bigger, it seemed like opportunities start to get smaller as well until the best gift, Everything Everywhere All at Once, arrived.

Yeoh also drew laughter from the audience when music started playing, signaling her that it was time to end her speech.

“Shut up, please. I can beat you up, OK? And that’s serious.”

Yeoh has had a long and successful beginning her acting career in Hong Kong and later internationally in James Bond's Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).

She is also well-known for doing her own stunts.

The former beauty queen is turning out to having a successful award season so far, recently becoming the first Asian to win the best actress award at the National Board of Review Award.

Predictions are also abound with Yeoh snagging a nomination at this year's Oscars.
