Labuan celebrating FT Day this year in style

LABUAN: The Labuan Corporation (LC) is celebrating the 39th Federal Territory Day this year in style.

Ahead of FT Day which falls on Feb 1, LC successfully hoisted the Federal Territories flag underwater at Rusukan Kecil Island, Wednesday.

Fifteen divers from the Labuan Fisheries Department took part in the underwater flag hoisting ceremony. .

LC Chief Executive Officer Rithuan Ismail said the idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people in this island and as reminiscence of the elevation of Labuan as one of the Federal Territories.

He said the Federal Territories Hoisting Flag campaign, which is part of the Federal Territory Day celebration this year, was launched on Jan 15.

“The campaign is to encourage citizens to hoist the tricolour flag of the Federal Territories at their homes and business premises to mark the 39th Federal Territory Day,” he said.

He said the corporation has started hoisting the Federal Territories flag along the main streets in downtown here.

Labuan Fisheries Director Faizal Ibrahim Suhaili said the three horizontal bars of yellow, blue and red, with the coat of arms of Malaysia in the middle of the FT flag, was hoisted about five metres underwater during the 30-minute ceremony.

“We managed to unfurl and hoist the Federal Territories flag underwater successfully, and the flag will be at the bottom as long as it can,” he said.

Faizal Suhaili said the hoisting of the flag was conducted on the same day of the coral reef restoration programme of his department.
