SANDAKAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been urged to look into expediting the appointment of the new Municipal Council President. Datuk John Khoo Cheo Ping together with Elopura Community Development Leader Ng Boon Leng briefed him on problems faced by the people such as the complexity of business operations as well as local governance issues.

“The GRS government has achieved excellent performance under the leadership of a visionary Chief Minister.

“However, the vacancy of the Sandakan Municipal Council President caused governance issues to stall,” they said.

They suggested that the candidate for the position be a native of Sandakan and have an authoritative identity. The post was vacated by Benedict Asmat in November, who contested the Beluran parliamentary seat in the GE15 and lost.

They said basic facilities and local infrastructure development such as bad roads, streetlights not working, sewage and sewerage system issues, garbage, the environment, blocked drainage systems and water supply had greatly affected people’s lives.

“This greatly harmed the people in terms of socio-economic development as well as economic growth to ensure the well-being of the people.

Therefore, the strengthening of community development requires a long-term plan and the strengthening of unlimited tasks,” they said.  Hajiji promised to solve the various issues as soon as possible.
