Tawau murder: Remand of 8 cops extended

TAWAU: Eight Esscom officers and policemen suspected of being involved in the murder of an e-hailing driver on Jan. 13 have been remanded another seven days until Feb. 8.

Magistrate Dzul Elmy Mohd Yunus in the proceedings conducted at the Tawau IPD lock-up allowed the request by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to enable further investigations to be carried out.

The original remand order on all four officers, including one with the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) and the four members, was to end on Wednesday (February 1).

The case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

Last Monday, Nurima Juli, the ex-wife of the murder victim was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with killing the man (her ex-husband) whose body was found in a palm plantation with a Myvi car.

However, no plea was recorded from the 33-year-old woman when the charge sheet was read before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Mohd Yunus.

The accused was charged with several individuals who are still at large for killing Nurman Bakaratu, 62, in an oil palm plantation near Jalan Anjur Juara, Jalan Apas Batu 5 between 7.30 and 9 pm on 13 January 2023.

The motive was said to be jealousy.

The court set March 6 as the date for re-mention of the case for the woman, pending chemical, and forensic reports, and a requisition notice.

No bail was offered against the accused who would continue to be held in Tawau prison until the case was mentioned.

The media previously reported the discovery of the body of an unidentified man with an e-hailing car in a palm plantation in Batu 5.

Following that, several arrests were made, including eight officers and policemen, one with the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC).
