Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan (Warisan) Vice President Datuk Jaujan Sambangkong, who is also Sulabayan Assemblyman, urged the Government, especially the Ministry of Education, to build concrete jetties for the use of students and teachers in Sulabayan.
“Sulabayan has 11 primary schools and one secondary school,” he said.
The schools around the island in the Semporna parliamentary constituency need to be equipped with better jetties for the comfort of students and teachers.
He said many teachers go back and forth from the island to Semporna town because there are not enough quarters on the island.
“The jetty that collapsed recently was a village jetty and was used by the students to go school on a nearby island due to the lack of road access.
“I request the relevant ministry to take this matter seriously and build a concrete bridge,” he said.
The jetty in Pababag village collapsed about 6.45am last Monday when students were boarding at the village pier to get to school.
A total of 20 Pababag Island National School (SK) students and five Kemas Kindergarten students fell into the water in the incident.
Two students suffered minor injuries involving cuts on their lips and hands as a result of being hit by the wood and cement of the collapsed pier.
