Kuala Lumpur: Bersatu will write an official letter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seeking the release of its accounts, says party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
At a press conference here, Muhyiddin said MACC should immediately cancel the freeze if it did not find any proof of misappropriation of funds or abuse of power in Bersatu’s accounts.
“This is important, so that the Bersatu administration can function smoothly, and our workers can be paid,” said the former prime minister, who is also the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman.
He also said Bersatu needed access to its funds for the upcoming state elections in Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan.
Muhyiddin said the MACC should not be used to cripple PN’s machinery.
“This (freezing of accounts) will prevent us from carrying out any activities during campaigning for the state elections.”
However, he said Bersatu was ready to give its full cooperation to MACC.
Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man claimed the freezing of Bersatu’s accounts was aimed at raising doubts over PN’s integrity.
He also said PAS was willing to give its full cooperation in the probe.
“We are confident that MACC will act fairly. We hope MACC will unfreeze Bersatu’s accounts once they confirm there is no case.”
Yesterday, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen as part of a probe into the alleged misappropriation of billions of ringgit meant for Covid-19 stimulus packages.
