PUTRAJAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has given Umno 60 days to give a detailed explanation on the no-contest motion for its top two posts, which was approved at the party’s recent general assembly.

Zahid said Umno had met RoS twice over the matter, represented by party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan and its legal adviser.

“I’m confident that the secretary-general can fulfil RoS’ requests,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

Two Umno members had lodged a report with RoS about three weeks ago seeking an investigation into a possible breach of the party’s constitution.

They claimed the tabling of the motion at the Umno general assembly had breached Article 10 of the party’s constitution. They also insisted that it had to be tabled two weeks before the general assembly, or seven days if tabled by the Supreme Council.

Umno was reported to have been split over whether the top two posts should be contested, with some saying it risked dividing the party, and others arguing that Zahid and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, must prove they had the support of the grassroots.

Umno had met RoS director-general Nawardi Saad on Jan 31, with documents on the party’s decision to bar any contests for the top two posts.

Ahmad had said the RoS confirmed that the no-contest motion did not violate any rules or regulations.

Zahid reiterated that the motion had followed the required procedures and Umno’s constitution.

“I am confident that the Umno general assembly complied with the rules that have been set as well as what is enshrined in the party’s constitution.”
