Yesterday, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan was charged with accepting a RM6.9 million bribe and soliciting an unspecified amount over a RM232 million road project linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.
PETALING JAYA: Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has asked Bersatu to allow him to step down as the party’s information chief following his corruption charges.

“I have asked the party president (Muhyiddin Yassin) and Supreme Council to replace me with someone else as the information chief.

“I have informed the president and secretary-general (Hamzah Zainudin) of my decision, but the final decision will be made by the party,” he told reporters at Parliament today.

He said he will be meeting Muhyiddin later today to discuss his next step.

Yesterday, Wan Saiful was charged with accepting a RM6.9 million bribe and soliciting an unspecified amount over a RM232 million road project linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

Wan Saiful believes that stepping down from the party post would have a positive effect on Perikatan Nasional, and prove that it walks the talk about integrity and combating corruption.

“For instance, when someone in the party has a court case, we are willing to let go of our executive roles until we are cleared (by the courts).

“We will not use our power for personal gains,” he said.

He also said he will continue to help the party in the upcoming state elections in any possible way, and reiterated that the charges brought against him were politically motivated.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim questioned if Wan Saiful would relinquish all party positions after being charged with corruption, in defending Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s appointment as deputy prime minister.

“Of course, the answer is no. So, that is my stance,” Anwar had told the Dewan Rakyat.
