PUTRAJAYA: The National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) initiative has been selected as one of the five Project Champions with the highest votes under the category C2 - Information And Communication Infrastructure: An Essential Foundation For An Inclusive Information Society of the World Summit On The Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2023.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a statement Friday, said the final result of the winner will be announced at the WSIS 2023 Award Ceremony hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in conjunction with the 2023 WSIS Forum at the ITU United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Switzerland on March 14.
According to the MCMC, the success is a great recognition for MCMC, which has worked hard to realise the Jendela initiative that aspires to provide connectivity coverage and the provision of quality Internet services for Malaysians.
“This recognition is proof of the government and MCMC’s commitment to continue empowering connectivity and strengthening the digital ecosystem so that the people and country will always be prepared to face current economic challenges as a whole,” it said. Jendela, which covers two phases, has been developed to continuously improve connectivity coverage and the provision of quality Internet services for the benefit of the people, the business sector and also the stakeholders.
By the end of 2025, MCMC said Jendela aims to expand gigabit access for fixed line broadband to nine million premises, 100 per cent of populated areas to have Internet coverage and reach an average mobile broadband speed of 100Mbps.
The WSIS Prizes is a unique international competition developed to assess and recognise outstanding projects in implementing development-oriented strategies that use information and communication technology (ICT) as a catalyst for development.
It is also a platform to identify and showcase success stories and role models, to appreciate the efforts of stakeholders for their commitment and added value to society towards achieving the goals of WSIS.
