Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has questioned if opposition-led states affected by floods also allocate funds to all assemblymen.
This comes after Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin, who is the Perikatan Nasional chairman, urged the government to allocate RM300,000 to MPs from constituencies in various states that have been affected by floods.
“How do they categorise themselves if they label us as ‘cruel’ since they themselves don’t allocate (funds) in their own states?”
Anwar was speaking to the media during an event to mark National Craft Day at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex.
He also urged the opposition to discuss allocations for flood-hit areas with the government.
Commenting on Muhyiddin’s proposal to double the flood aid to Johor from RM50 million to RM100 million, Anwar said that the RM50 million in flood aid went straight to the flood victims, without any “commission”.
“We gave (RM50 million) first. Besides, there is no commission, so the amount goes directly to victims.”
Anwar added that aid to Johor would have reached almost RM1 billion if flood mitigation projects were included.
According to Bernama, 53,040 people in three states had been evacuated due to floods, with Johor still the worst hit, with 49,410 people relocated to relief centres.
In Pahang, 3,029 people have been evacuated while 601 residents in Melaka have been moved to relief centres.
