Kuala Lumpur: Bersatu is taking legal action against the decision by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze its bank accounts.
The party filed an application in the High Court yesterday, claiming that the decision to freeze its bank accounts was done in bad faith.
Bersatu said MACC had “abused their powers” by conducting selective “political prosecution” against Perikatan Nasional (PN).
According to the application, the party wants the court to revoke the freeze order issued by MACC.
It also stated that the party was not given any prior notification from the agency on the freeze order.
“We only realised our bank accounts were frozen when several transactions could not be completed,” Bersatu said in its application.
Bersatu also alleged that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi abused their powers, resulting in MACC’s probe into the party’s accounts.
Last month, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that several bank accounts held by Bersatu were frozen as part of the agency’s investigation into the party.
The probe is linked to the alleged misappropriation of Covid-19 stimulus packages worth RM92.5 billion by the former PN-led government.
