Anwar says don’t simply accuse govt of political persecution
Anwar Ibrahim says he does not interfere in the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has told the government’s critics to “check the facts” before accusing it of political persecution.

“In the Jana Wibawa case, it was based on documents obtained by the finance ministry,” he told reporters after an event at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa here.

He was responding to claims that the recent arrests and charging of Bersatu leaders were evidence of political persecution by the government.

This comes amid speculation that Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman and former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin may be arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC is probing the alleged misappropriation of Covid-19 stimulus packages worth RM92.5 billion by the former PN-led government.

This includes the soliciting and accepting of bribes linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

Anwar reiterated that he did not interfere in the investigation carried out by MACC.

“You can’t say all cases are politically motivated. If that is the case, then MACC can’t arrest anyone who is involved in other corruption cases,” he said.

On Feb 21, following its probe, MACC charged Bersatu’s Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan with accepting a RM6.9 million bribe and soliciting an unspecified amount over a RM232 million road project linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad was also slapped with five charges of soliciting and accepting bribes over projects involving Jana Wibawa.

MACC had also arrested and remanded Bersatu treasurer-general Salleh Bajuri last week. He was later released on bail.
