Kuala Lumpur: Remarks by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang about an impending government collapse were misconstrued as a call for a revolution, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday.
He said there were no plans for a revolution to change the government, and gave the assurance that the coalition would never do anything that was against the Federal Constitution.
Muhyiddin said Hadi’s prediction that the government would collapse by itself was misunderstood.
“(Some misconstrued the remarks) as though meaning a revolution will be held. No such thing. This is a democracy and we will defend our democratic system,” said Muhyiddin in his closing speech at Bersatu’s annual general assembly.
However, the former prime minister said voters who voted against Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 15th general election may be disgruntled by how their chosen parties were working with PH in the federal government.
“The core issue doesn’t involve us but the people, who are represented by the MPs in Parliament. Whether it’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) or Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), they’re now with the government.
“Surely the people (who voted for them) cannot stand this and will ask, ‘Why are we still with PH? We cannot stand it for so long. Let’s do something about it.’
“Do you understand?” he told delegates.
Hadi had been reported as predicting that the Anwar Ibrahim-led government would collapse though he did not elaborate on how it would happen.
His remarks came not long after he told the Dewan Rakyat that PN should not be blamed if the government were to collapse.
The Marang MP later said the opposition had every right to formulate plans to topple the current government, adding that PN was working on retaking Putrajaya “not only through elections but also in Parliament”. Hadi said this was commonplace in a democratic country.
