Over 500,000ha having trees nearing end of economic lifespan: Sabah oil palm output at risk

SANDAKAN: Malaysia Palm Oil Association (MPOA) is committed to ongoing engagements with relevant stakeholders on labour shortage, mechanisation, productivity gap and unabated production costs, including taxation and emerging sustainability issues such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

Chief Executive Joseph Tek Choon Yee said it is also keen to stress the importance of replanting with the Ministry and related agencies.

He said the age profile of oil palm trees in Sabah revealed it has the biggest area with trees above 25 years in Malaysia with 184,746 hectares or 12.3pc above 25 years, while 352,689ha are between 19 and 25 years.
