Kota Kinabalu: An application by a group calling itself “Pillars of Sabah” to form an association was approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) on April 12, as Persatuan Seni Masyarakat Tonggak Sabah (Pillars of Sabah).
It is now known as Pillars of Sabah Community Art Association, or POSCAA.
The association said this crucial step coincides with World Art Day celebrations as well as the second anniversary of the community art project’s untimely displacement from its “original home” at 20 Jalan Haji Saman in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, an immensely important historical site but which is now derelict.
It is hoped that as a registered association, the initiative may be treated fairly in its unwavering pursuit for greater community empowerment through creative expression.
“Furthermore, the association aims to finally live up to its name by establishing localised sub-communities all across Sabah, in order to facilitate agendas and activities that are both relevant and desired by the sub-communities themselves.
“The association’s primary objectives are to nurture, support and promote Sabah artists; establish a reliable framework for the protection of Sabah artists’ rights and build a thriving community of like-minded artists and non-artists alike.
“The association’s secondary objectives are to offer a meaningful contribution to the communities and, in doing so, facilitate suitable discussion on any relevant topics; inspire a more fulfilling appreciation of art, especially among ent.
The association welcomes both artists and non-artists, Sabahans and non-Sabahans alike. Membership application forms can be accessed on any of the association’s social media platforms.
The association’s founding Executive Council members comprise Jared Amadis Abdul Rahman, Yvonne Yong Latifi, Janice Pinso, Belinda Chong Yie Thing, Charmaine Latonia Liau Xuan, Edna Thecla Albert, Geraldine Yong Yee Wan, Muhd Muazzam Rosemidian @ Rosdi, and Phang Shel Ly.
