Kota Kinabalu: A man who had in possession a modified sickle in public without a permit, was jailed five years and ordered to get a stroke of the cane.
Muhamad Ain Kasim changed his plea and pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus.
He was found of having the weapon without any permit at 11am on Nov 3, 2022 at the Central Market area, here.
The offence under Section 6(1) of the Corrosives, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, and whipping, on conviction.
The court ordered Muhammad to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest of Nov 3, 2022. During mitigation, Muhammad who was not represented, asked for leniency and that the sentence to be run from the date of his arrest.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tham Pou Jin urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence. In another case, a man was jailed four months for entering the State illegally.
Suraj Ramli admitted to entering the State without any document and was arrested on March 10 this year at the city area after failing to produce his identity document to the police.
He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and after completing his jail sentence, he was also ordered referred to Immigration Department for his biometrics data to be recorded before deportation.
