Govt to make it easier to recognise workers’ unions, says minister
Human resources minister V Sivakumar says the government is studying several issues to improve the welfare of workers.
Kuala Lumpur: The human resources ministry will make several amendments to the process of recognising workers’ unions to give employees an avenue to fight for their rights and to seek justice.

Its minister, V Sivakumar, said this would be given due attention by the government since there are employers who refuse to recognise unions in their companies.

“I was informed that there are cases where employers refuse to recognise workers’ unions headed by employees and that makes it difficult for the employees to fight for their rights,” he said at an event organised by the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) to mark Labour Day here last night.

At the same time, he said, the government is studying several other issues, including pension for the private sector, employment guarantee, workers’ health scheme and insurance and issues related to their welfare.

“The issue of foreign workers’ welfare also needs to be given due attention and action. We must ensure that foreign workers are protected by the law and given their rights, just like local employees,” he said.

Sivakumar said the government will also work with employers to ensure workers who have limited qualifications are given opportunities to enhance their careers or provided with education through training and courses.

“The government will continue to introduce policies and laws to ensure the welfare, safety and rights of workers are protected,” he said.
