PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to “declare” that they will not be part of any plot to topple the government over the next five years.
Amid speculation of a plot to topple Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Lim pointed out how Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had called for an end to political instability yesterday, saying “enough is enough”.
The former Iskandar Puteri MP also said the King had urged for political stability at the opening of the Parliament session in February, after the nation went through four years of political crises.
He urged Muhyiddin and Hadi to publicly declare that Bersatu and PAS will abide by the advice of the King and Sultan Ibrahim for politicians to ensure political stability in the country.
“(I call on Muhyiddin and Hadi to declare) that Bersatu and PAS would not be involved in any plot to topple the Anwar unity government for the next five years.
“This is a test of whether political leaders and politicians are prepared to subordinate their personal interests and that of their political parties to national interests,” he said in a statement.
It was reported that 10 MPs who previously backed Muhyiddin, the Bersatu president, after the 15th general election were planning to force by-elections. They were said to be planning to quit their parties, thereby invoking the anti-hopping law which would cause their seats to be vacated.
Yesterday, FMT quoted a well-placed source as saying Istana Negara would not entertain claims by any party that Anwar had lost majority support.
In March, Hadi said the opposition had every right to formulate plans to topple the government, adding that PN was working on retaking Putrajaya “not only through elections but also in Parliament”.
The PAS president said “votes of no confidence, statutory declarations and even defections” were commonplace in a democratic country, and that the King cannot prevent democratic changes as he was subject to the Federal Constitution.
