Kota Kinabalu: Eight students from the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) and Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are currently undergoing a three-month aquaculture industrial training in Japan.
UMS BMRI aquaculture programme head, Associate Professor Dr Abentin Estim, said the students are placed at Nagasaki Eel Farm, Olive Suissan and Tanoura Fisheries Cooperative which are renowned for their success in aquaculture from Wednesday (May 3) to July 25 this year.
He said the programme will provide the students, who are in the final year aquaculture degree programme, with hands-on experience in a variety of aquaculture methods and emerging technologies in the field.
“We look forward to seeing how the students adapt upon their return to Malaysia and hope they will apply their knowledge to support the local aquaculture industry.
“This is the 20th batch of aquaculture students benefitting from cooperating institutions and industries in Japan,” Abentin said in a statement, Friday.
He said while in Japan the students will also have ample opportunities to learn about Japan’s traditions, culture and professional ethics.
