RANAU: Grazing Fields (PR) in the district will be developed to bring more benefits for its members, said District Officer, Jumain Abdul Ghani.
Speaking at the Meeting of PR Trustees Together with Members of PR Kampung Mampakot Ranau, he said a plan was set up to look into ways to develop such areas.
“I emphasised the need for the villagers to properly maintain such area by developing it to benefit its members.
“Pasture management should also consult with the district PR trustee so it is on the right track.
“This also includes ensuring the pasture is not encroached by other parties that would misuse it,” he said.
Jumain said PR Trustees would work together with the Veterinary Department.
He added that among the suggestions for the area is to place livestock that are still roaming in public areas.
Meanwhile, other districts in Sabah also made plans to revitalise grazing fields in their respective areas, especially those that went idle through the years.
Recently it was announced that idle grazing fields in Tambunan would be turned into high-yielding coconut plantations.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said eight villages had been identified and selected under the first phase of the project that covers 1,375ha of grazing fields.
Dr Jeffrey, who is also State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, said the second phase would involve 30 additional villages with gazetted grazing fields.
He said the government, in collaboration with the Malaysian Kuwaiti Investment Co Sdn Bhd (MKIC), aimed to transform 9,506ha of under-utilised grazing fields in the district.
This, he said, is to improve the socio-economy of locals by creating jobs and business opportunities.
