Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd provides 26 mobile gen-sets to boost supply

TAWAU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is providing 26 units of mobile generator sets to increase the margin of energy storage in the electricity grid system in Sabah.

Its Senior General Manager (Asset Management) Idris Mohd Noor said as of last May 2 until Wednesday, a total of 11 units of mobile generator sets had been installed in Kota Kinabalu and Tawau, with an additional 15 units to be installed at strategic locations in the State next week.

“The scorching hot weather that has been raging lately is one of the reasons for the sudden increase in electricity consumption, with electricity consumption throughout Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan having reached its highest level of 1080 MegaWatts (MW) this month,” he told reporters after handing over six sets of mobile generator sets, here, Wednesday.

He said the high demand for electricity had a direct impact on the Sabah grid system, but SESB would only enforce supply rationing against consumers when they are no other options.

“This problem of lack of electricity generation capacity also causes an average of 20-30MW of electricity to be rationed during peak load times, which usually start from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm,” he added.

Idris hoped the installation of the mobile generator sets, it would reduce the need to implement supply rationing for consumers during the current hot weather.

If there is a need to implement supply rationing, SESB will ensure that the rationing schedule is issued earlier to make it easier for users to know in advance when electricity rationing will be implemented in their area, he added.
