Kota Kinabalu: The State Government will table the anti-party hopping Bill during the State Legislative Assembly sitting next week.This was revealed by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew during the Asian Bird Fair 2023 media conference, here, Thursday.
“My understanding is that the Sabah Government will table the Bill this coming Assembly sitting and we will support it,” said the Sabah Pakatan Harapan Chairperson.
She said it will be tabled because the Chief Minister had mentioned this.
“I know where the confusion comes because the Speaker says no, but it is confirmed it will be tabled and Pakatan Harapan will support this Bill when it is tabled in the Assembly next week,” she said.
State Speaker Datuk Kadzim M Yahya was recently quoted as saying that the Private Member’s Bill on anti-party hopping law submitted by Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal will not be tabled in the Assembly sitting next week.
Kadzim was quoted as saying that the anti-hop law is not listed on the agenda of the coming sitting, adding that the State Government has not confirmed a timeline on tabling it.
The State Cabinet had last year agreed to bring the matter to the State Assembly after the Dewan Rakyat passed a Federal constitutional amendment that prevents elected representatives from changing parties.
“The move is in line with the State Government’s commitment to creating political stability in Sabah after facing an uncertain political situation for a long time,” Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was quoted as saying during an event in Keningau.
