Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Nur Aleeya Syakira Awang Ali came third in the Women’s Graded Masters category at the 41st Malaysian Open Bowling Championship 2023 held at Sunway Mega Lanes l, Petaling Jaya.
The 17-year-old accumulated a total score of 1536 to finish behind champion Lavinia Kho (1646) from Sukma Sarawak and Sukma Johor’s Nurul Aisyah Salleh (1631).
“I am very grateful and happy with my third place finish in the Women’s Graded category and I would like to thank all the coaches, Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Tenpin Bowling Association and my family for their support and guidance,” she said.
She also said it was sheer determination that drove her to finish on the podium despite exhaustion.
“I have played consecutively for 12 days since the start of the competition and the qualifying session was very intense until the 90th block.
“In addition, I also managed to qualify for the Youth Girls Graded final and managed to place myself in the sixth position.
“Although I suffered a finger injury, and had to endure physical and mental fatigue, I continued to fight for the sake of Sabah and my family who have always given me the encouragement and support,” she said.
Meanwhile, team manager Kamsul Shah is satisfied with the team’s overall performance and three players also performed well in the Youth Open Finals with Intan Qistina Tamring finishing in fifth place, Cara Loh Wai Theng in sixth and Nur Jeehan Iezzaty in 17th .
The next tournament for the state team is the Sarawak Hornbill tournament to be held in Kuching from July 3-9.
