Improvement in Sabah’s SPM results: Education Department

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded an improvement in the 2022 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, with a 0.13 per cent increase in the National Average Grade (GPN) to 5.22 from 5.35 in 2021.

Sabah Education Department Deputy Director (School Management Sector) Mohd Zaini Yanin said the percentage of students who qualified to receive their certificates also increased to 92.37 per cent from 89.76 per cent in 2021.

He said a total of 34,461 students sat for the examination.

Of the 34,461, Zaini said, 344 obtained straight A’s (A+, A and A-) compared to 253 in 2021, signifying an increase of 0.36 per cent in the number of students obtaining excellent results.

He added that 3,155 candidates obtained at least grade C in all subjects, compared to 2,944 in 2021, an increase of 211 or 0.6 per cent. 

“It can be seen that quality and quantity wise, Sabah showed a significant improvement (for the 2022 SPM),” he told reporters during the announcement of results at SMK Agama Kota Kinabalu, here, Thursday.

He said only 12,026 students passed their subjects in 2022, compared to 12,385 in 2021, a decrease of 1.06 per cent. 

The gap between the urban and rural areas also widened from 0.53 points in 2021 to 0.61 in 2022.

“We will look into this and see what needs to be improved. We are aware that a lot of schools in Sabah are located in rural areas,” he said, adding that 18 schools achieved a 100 per cent passing rate. 

He said the 10 best performing schools include SM Sains Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, SMK Agama Kota Kinabalu, SMK Agama Tun Ahmadshah Kota Kinabalu, SM Sains Lahad Datu, SMK St Michael Penampang, SMA Al-Irsyadiah Marakau Ranau, SMK Perempuan Sandakan, SMK Agama Tun Juhar Sandakan, SM Islamiah Tawau and SMK St Patrick, Tawau. 

Zaini added that 48 out of 74 subjects undertaken by students showed improvement, including the six core subjects, of which History recorded the largest increase with 0.24 marks.
