SERDANG: The Unity Government must adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to stop groups and individuals, including politicians, from making extreme speeches which could undermine peace, stability and progress in the country, said the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) President Tan Sri T C Goh.
He said this was necessary in view of the growing trend of some politicians in making extreme speeches about race and religion of late, which has reached a worrisome state and causing deep concern to many peace-loving Malaysians.
He hoped the Government would adopt tough measures to effectively curb such a destructive trend before it gets out of hand.
Goh, who is also President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS), was speaking at a fundraising dinner hosted by Serdang Ga Hou Tong (SGHTFA) Fellowship Association at Yeoh Tiong Lay Auditorium, Wisma Huazong, here, Sunday.
Goh also reminded that Malaysia has always been a multiracial, multicultural and multi-faiths country since independence and it is a unique feature that is the pride of the nation.
He said there were some politicians who were increasingly radical with their speeches and actions, such as gradually banning the sale of alcoholic drinks and licensed gaming operations, besides peddling the narrative of the Unity Government being dominated by non-Malays, etc.
“The rights and positions of all races are clearly stipulated in the Federal Constitution. Hence, no one should attempt to manipulate it to achieve their political agendas,” he said.
Meanwhile, he commended SGHTFA for its commitment to serving the community through its charity and education programmes.
The event was aimed chiefly to raise funds for SGHTFA’s Education and Charity Fund. Also in attendance were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Deputy President of Malaysia Ga Hou Tong Fellowship Association, Vice Chairman of The World Saw Clan Association, Tan Sri Sow Chin Chuan, President of the Federation of Malaysia Chinese Commerce Association (FEMACCA) and the Organising Chairman of the event, among others.
