PETALING JAYA: All telecommunication companies (telcos) have signed access agreements to provide 5G services with coverage having achieved 62.1% nationwide as of last month.

Fahmi said Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican and ministry secretary-general Fauzi Isa co-chaired a meeting of the 5G task force today to ensure the implementation adheres to the stipulated guidelines.

Prior to this, Fahmi said the government had decided to implement a dual 5G network once the current rollout under Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) had reached 80% of populated areas.

He said the switch to the dual network model would be implemented in line with the global practice of offering multiple networks.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the government’s decision on the cybersecurity bill will be pursued by the National Cybersecurity Agency (Nacsa). The role of CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) will be clarified to avoid any overlap.

“This is important because every country needs a regulatory body for the cybersecurity industry.

“In Malaysia, we are moving in that direction and it will be coordinated by Nacsa.”

Fahmi said he wanted Nacsa to be the regulatory body when the cybersecurity law was put in place.

“CSM, on the other hand, will play an important role in ensuring cybersecurity,” he added.

On June 15, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the national cybersecurity committee had decided to draft a cybersecurity bill.
