Sabah vital in carbon capture, storage: PM

Kuala Lumpur: Sabah plays an important role in Malaysia’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reach its national goal of net zero emission economy, inside the State’s old defunct offshore oil and gas fields as with the case of Sarawak, two of Malaysia’s most productive oil and gas states.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this in his keynote address at inaugural Energy Asia 2023 organised by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) on Monday, attended by more than 3,000 local and foreign delegates, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre which featured more than 100 speakers from 27 countries.

“We are taking the opportunity to develop the framework and harness the commercial potential of carbon capture and storage, particularly in depleted reservoirs offshore Sabah and Sarawak,” Anwar said, as well as achieving the climate goal for the region that will require significant traction in clean energy investment.
