PETALING JAYA: Former prime ministers Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin held a two-hour meeting last night to discuss the Malay Proclamation.

The meeting is believed to be the first the two have had since the Sheraton Move in 2020 which ultimately led to the collapse of the Mahathir-led administration, with Muhyiddin replacing him as prime minister.

Malay Proclamation secretariat chairman Khairuddin Abu Hassan said the meeting of the two former Umno leaders offered hope to the Malay community.

“The meeting between these two Malay leaders for almost two hours last night has revitalised the agenda to empower and strengthen the Malays,” he said in a statement.

Khairuddin, however, did not go into detail about what Mahathir and Muhyiddin discussed.

Khairuddin said the Malay Proclamation which was started by Mahathir seeks to unite Malays regardless of their political ideologies.

“The foundation of the Malay Proclamation movement lies not in partisan politics, but rather in the genuine spirit to fight for the Malays.”

Several leaders from Bersatu and PAS, including its president Abdul Hadi Awang have signed the Malay Proclamation in their personal capacities.

In a recent interview with FMT, Muhyiddin said the 12 points listed in the Malay Proclamation were the foundation of Bersatu’s struggles.

Previously, both Muhyiddin and Mahathir said they were willing to work with each other for the sake of the Malays and Islam.
