'Ignore Mahathir, Malaysia is everyone’s home'
PKR is committed to upholding diversity despite the difficulties in winning electoral support, says PKR Youth chief Adam Adli.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is everyone’s home, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli said today, urging the public to ignore the claim by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that promoting a multi-ethnic country went against the Federal Constitution.

“That’s Tun (Mahathir) for you, he says what he wants according to his needs. We shouldn’t entertain it, it is bad for us,” Adam told FMT.

“Malaysia is everyone’s home, it was built for all. We’re part of a big race, the Malaysian race,” he said, adding Malaysia was known for the harmony among its diverse people.

Adam said the people could evaluate Mahathir, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, based on his actions.

Mahathir has been promoting the Malay Proclamation, his latest initiative to unite Malays across the political divide.

Earlier this month, the former Langkawi MP said it was unconstitutional to promote a multi-ethnic country, drawing criticism from various parties and legal experts.

Adam said: “I don’t know what constitution he is referring to.”

The former activist said PKR is committed to upholding diversity, even though this stand makes it more difficult to attract Malay support compared to race-based struggles.

“We try to engage more people so they understand that the Malay culture and Islam promotes mutual respect and harmony.”

Adam said greater engagement of Malays and religious leaders was needed, all while upholding a diverse and colourful nation.
