Sulu sultanate terrorised locals on East Coast. No Sultan will do it if truly his subjects: Historian
Historian-researcher Avtar Singh Sandhu
Kota Kinabalu: The Local inhabitants on the east coast of what is today Sabah were subjected to 300 years of piracy, raiding, kidnapping and enslavement by those linked to the Sulu sultanate.

“This historical narratives is missing from their version of history.

“Sabah natives on the East Coast faced the threat of being attacked, and their villages destroyed, and the native population being kidnapped and sold as slaves. The only other option they may have had was to pay tribute instead to avoid the alternative,” said historian-researcher Avtar Singh Sandhu.
