Kota Kinabalu: A man was killed and two others injured when the four-wheel-drive (4WD) they were in skidded and plunged into a ravine in Jalan Kampung Kiapad, Kionsom, Inanam, early Thursday.
In the 2.35am incident, the 39-year-old deceased, Omar Mahilin, was seated in the front passenger seat.
The 29-year-old male driver was severely injured, while the 42-year-old woman sitting at the back suffered minor injuries.
A Sabah Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the survivors helped themselves out of the Toyota Land Cruiser before their arrival.
“The body was extracted and pronounced dead by a medical team and was handed over to police for further action,” a spokesperson said.
The operation involving 13 Lintas fire station officers and personnel ended at 4.40am.
Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said investigations at the scene revealed the victims were travelling from Kampung Kiapad towards Inanam town.
“While descending the hill, the vehicle suddenly went out of control and veered off the road into the ravine on the right side.
“The vehicle rolled several times, approximately 80 metres downhill, causing the driver and the backseat passenger to be ejected from the vehicle,” he said, adding investigations are ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 are ongoing.
