THE State Government, through the Local Government and Housing Ministry (KKTP), is implementing a pilot project to dispose of garbage using green technology in Sandakan, Tawau and Papar.
Deputy Chief Minister II-cum-Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the garbage would not necessarily be segregated.
“We can compact all the garbage and put it on some reactor so that we can dispose of it hygienically. It is a green technology,” he said when met after launching the Festival “I-HIJAU KKTP”: Inisiatif HIJAU KKTP, Aspirasi Sabah Maju Jaya 2023 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu on July 16.
Dr Joachim said KKTP was still looking at the contractors for the pilot project and that there was nothing specific for Sandakan, Tawau and Papar chosen to pioneer the project.
“No (specific reason). It is just a pilot project. We don’t know the outcome, but if successful, we will expand it throughout Sabah,” he said.
Dr Joachim also said the Government encourages people to segregate their refuse, but it is not compulsory.
“If we make it compulsory, we also have to be prepared to provide all the necessary bins, and I think there will be a few issues. Simply put, they (people) do not want to follow,” he said.
