RANAU: The Fire and Rescue Department here advises the public to observe some “SOP”, especially during the current dry and windy season.
Department Head, Ridwan Mohd Taib, urged the community to prioritise personal, family and community safety and avoid doing risky activities at this time.
“We advise the public not to burn in the open. If burning is unavoidable, it needs to be monitored and controlled to prevent the spread of fire to nearby areas.
“Although open burning is still minor, we hope the people would not do any open burning considering the risks and health impact on other people as well as air pollution.
“What we hope for is that people here would stop from making any more open burning. After all, in this time of drought, it would be absolutely quick for the fire to spread and get out of hand,” he said.
The community is also advised to avoid sheltering near old trees that are not strong, to avoid being hit by broken branches or twigs blown by the wind.
“During this summer as well, we found there was an increase in calls regarding venomous animals. People are advised to always be wary of venomous animals which usually look for dim spots in areas near residential houses,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said although the situation in Ranau is still under control, his department is bracing for any eventuality as a result of the windy condition.
“So far we have received several complaints or reports from the public about strong wind condition. Since the phenomena began several weeks ago, there were cases of fallen trees that damaged properties.
“More serious cases like blown away house roofs are not reported. Nevertheless, we hope that no such occurrence would happen here until the weather improves,” he said.
Ridwan advised the public to keep safe, and make safety a priority.
Restrict other outdoor activities for the time being and make sure small children are looked after when they are outside.
“Should anyone hear or see any hazardous situation in their areas, notify the authority concerned. The public can reach us via the 999 emergency line or call the Fire Station at 088-878779. We are ready to help,” he said.
