Kota Kinabalu: Only 27 per cent of Sabah students chose to pursue higher education in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field in 2023.
State Science, Technology and Innovation (KSTI) Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the figure is still far from the 60 per cent STEM and 40 per cent literature stream target.
“We are hoping to achieve at least 30 per cent by 2024. It’s a relatively small number since the peninsula has more than 30 (per cent) of STEM students.
“This is very worrying because we want to provide human capital with the skills to meet future job needs,” he said when met after closing the 2023 Secondary School STEM Carnival at Sabah College, here, Tuesday.
