Fish-bombing: Nine held off Manukan

Kota Kinabalu: Marine police arrested nine Filipinos for suspected fish-bombing in the waters off the western coast of Pulau Manukan, here.

All suspects, aged between 25 and 60, were apprehended by officers from Kota Kinabalu during the “Taring Gelora” operation about 6pm, on Monday.

Some 500kg of various types of fish believed to have been caught using explosives, along with two boats they were using, were seized.

However, during the operation, the explosives used were thrown into the sea when the fishermen realised the presence of the marine police.

Marine Police Region Four Sabah Commander ACP Ahmad Ariffin confirmed the arrests and the seizure.

He said the estimated value of the seizure is RM104,665.

“The suspects and the seized items have been handed over to the Sabah Fisheries Department, Kota Kinabalu branch, for further action.

“The case will be investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985,” he said.
