PENAMPANG: Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan stressed the importance of participating in activities that promote the culture and traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples through ‘Sekolah Adat’ like the Sekolah Adat Anak Negeri at Suang Mongkabong, Tuaran.
The originator of the Sekolah Adat Anak Negeri Sabah is Shalmon Sanangan, who said the national vernacular educational syllabus was Malaya-centric and did not take into consideration the needs of majority of the definitive natives of Sabah and Sarawak after Malaysia was formed in 1963.
Many Indigenous youth face multiple barriers, cultural clashes, and different influences that, over time, push them to acquire an identity that is foreign to their place of origin to avoid being the object of discrimination and racism.
In extreme cases neglecting their culture, languages, and the practice of ancestral customs.
