Sabah target third place in MSSM meet

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are aiming to finish third overall in this year’s MSSM (Malaysia School Sports Council) meet.

State Education Department director Raisin Saidin made known his target to the State contingents during the flag handing over ceremony at Wisma Pendidikan here on Tuesday.

Sabah will be sending a total of 631 athletes to compete in 24 sports this year.

The event this year is divided into four phases and the first was held in July and the second phase from August 25-30 followed by the third from September 19-23 and final phase from October 15-19.

Raisin hopes the State can win at least four overall titles this year as compared to only two they achieved in the previous year.

“I hope our athletes can perform better than they did last year.

“Apart from defending the overall titles in badminton and athletics, we also have high hope that we can win the overall titles in aquatic and sailing as well as springing some surprises in other sports,” he said.

He added that cash incentives will be given to all the medal winners and record breakers.

“We will continue the practice of awarding incentives to our medallists and record breakers as we found that the bonuses will give encouragement and the athletes are more motivated to do well as a result.”

According to him, gold medallist in the individual event will receive RM300, silver (RM200) and bronze (RM100).

The cash incentive for winning gold in the group event is RM350, silver (RM250) and bronze (RM150), while individual record breaker will get RM200 and RM500 for group winner.
