Kota Kinabalu: A project manager was fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail, Wednesday, for giving a false statement to the police claiming he was robbed of RM13,125 and two smartphones.
Edmund Liew pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to giving a false written statement to Inspector Wan Ahmad Amirul Afif claiming that he was robbed of the cash and the gadgets by two unknown men at knifepoint at 1.30pm on June 26, this year
Liew committed the offence at 2.10pm on Aug 26, this year at the office of the investigating officer at the Kota Kinabalu Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division, here.
He was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to six months or fine up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that Liew claimed in his police report that he was robbed of money and
smartphones at the car park near the Pilar of Sabah in the city.
Police investigations revealed that the incident was just a fabrication because Liew had used his company’s money amounting to RM13,000 to pay all his debts.
The police also recovered the two smartphones that were allegedly stolen.
Unrepresented, Liew requested for leniency while the prosecution applied for an adequate sentence.
In another case, two men were fined RM500 or two weeks’ jail for assaulting a man.
Md Farrez Ashraf and Datu Bachityal Datu Ali, both 28, admitted to voluntarily causing hurt to one Ag Md Hazmie along with an accomplice still at large at 11.21pm on Sept 2 at a shop in Penampang Baru.
The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that Farrez and Bachityal went to Hazmie’s workplace and dragged him out before beating him.
Hazmie suffered pain in his neck and jaw.
Police investigations revealed that Bachityal was upset with Hazmie for making excuses to fulfil his promise to marry his sister who is now two months pregnant.
Bachityal told the court that he and his cousin, Farrez, beat Hazmie as they were angry when they found out that Hazmie had told his sister to abort her pregnancy.
Pleading for leniency, Bachityal, who was not represented, requested a lenient sentence as he is married with two children and would also be supporting his sister and assumed that Hazmie would not be marrying his sister following the assault.
Farrez, through duty counsel Carmen Khoo also requested leniency. Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit prosecuted.
